I can't believe I haven't blogged about
Aldi yet. I discovered Aldi years ago.
If you've never shopped at an Aldi before I would encourage you to check out their website (specifically their
FAQ page) before you head out to your local store. Shopping at Aldi is a little different.
Make sure you have a quarter (so you can get a cart - you get it back when you return your cart), and
bring your own bags (or you can purchase paper sacks or large, durable, reusable plastic bags - these are not Wal-mart bags. I've been using my Aldi bags for 3 years! ) Aldi does not accept coupons, mainly because 95% of Aldi's products are their brand (they are like one big "store brand" store). They
only accept cash and debit cards and be prepared to
bag your own items at the sacking table. They will ring everything up and place it into another buggy at the end of the lane. After you pay you take it to the bagging area and bag them up yourself.
All these things are ways that Aldi cuts their overhead costs so they can pass the savings on to you.
One of my favorite things about Aldi? Milk at Aldi is always $1.49/gallon. You can get two gallons at Aldi for what one costs you at another store! Two summers ago, when milk was nearly $5/gallon, Aldi had to go up to $1.99 and they had signs on their milk cases apologizing to their customers for the rise - but it was still a great deal!
Here's what I got:
1 Gallon Milk
about 2 lbs bananas (@ 39c/lb)
2 thin crust pepperoni pizzas ($1.99 each!)
2 cans green beans & 2 cans corn (49c each)
1 box whole wheat rigatoni ($1.09)
1 box Mac-N-Cheese (comparable to Kraft and only 35c!!)
1 box frozen cheese raviloi ($2.29)
1 box of 10 frozen fish fillets (comparable to Gorton's and only $2.99!)
8 hamburger buns (only 85c!!)
1 loaf of white sandwhich bread (79c!!!)
1 loaf of Cinnamon Raisin Bread (comparable to Nature's Own and only $1.99!)
Total for everything: $20.21!!!
If you have an Aldi in your area, I would encourage you to check it out. If you didn't want to clip coupons, but you wanted to save money on groceries, you could by switching to Aldi. I know that I could not get everything we needed from a trip to Aldi, but if you replace 75-80% of your shopping to Aldi, you could rack up some significant savings!
Just in my trip above, if I had been at another grocery store, I would have paid twice as much for milk, 50c more for bananas, $3-4 more for the fish fillets, $1 or more for the cinnamon raisin bread, and as much as $2 or more for each pizza. That's $10 or more just on 6 out of 15 items in my order!
